C&M Precision Tech turned to The Barnes Global Advisors to hone their growth strategy and expand their services with AM. Down to selecting technology and equipment to find the right fit for growth with existing clients and connect them with potential new clients.
C&M Precision Tech is a leader in precision machining, shipping more than 5 million parts per year into various industries, including defense, medical, aerospace, and general industry. Dan Villemaire, C&M President, heard of additive manufacturing and wanted to understand how AM fit his organization and if it could generate growth with current and new customers. Could AM serve as a cheaper or quicker path to prototyping production parts? Could it be another pre-form for producing finished machined goods and eliminate material waste? How do you select the best technology, equipment, and materials? How do you think about design for additive manufacturing (DfAM)? What skillsets do you need to be successful?
TBGA started with an AM training workshop to describe the breadth of AM technologies, their application space, maturity, and economic considerations of each. We reviewed C&M Precision Tech applications, and using the TBGA Process Economic Models, we evaluated multiple AM technologies, describing opportunities, risks, and total part costs for applying AM to C&M parts. The Barnes Global Advisors and C&M Precision Tech created a down select matrix to arrive at the best investment decision aligned to the C&M portfolio and growth goals.
The engagement gave C&M Precision Tech a clear view of the technologies and business strategy. C&M Precision Tech is now actively pursuing AM application development in multiple AM technologies with a refined strategy of ”Engineered for Production”.
