Supported by the U.S. Navy's Maritime Industrial Base, this virtual NO-COST course is designed for Submarine Industrial Base and Defense Industrial Base professionals who are evaluating, adopting, or scaling additive manufacturing capabilities in support of defense programs.

Description

This comprehensive 4-hour introduction to the additive manufacturing (AM) value chain is designed to provide participants with a foundational understanding and awareness of the rapidly evolving world of additive manufacturing and its use for maritime and defense applications.  The course provides an overview of the AM value chain and associated steps when using powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition to manufacture metal parts and components for new construction and sustainment.

Participants will develop an understanding of how the different AM technologies solve real-world manufacturing challenges and gain valuable insights into successful business cases that demonstrate AM’s transformative potential.  The course will equip participants with knowledge on qualification and certification approaches for metal AM parts and review the current state of standards and specifications for maritime and defense applications.

Structured Learning Modules

The course is organized into five comprehensive modules that build upon each other to create a complete learning experience:

  • Introduces participants to the fundamental concepts of additive manufacturing and provides a comprehensive overview of the technology landscape.

  • Explores the seven additive manufacturing technologies in detail, covering the materials that enable each process and their specific applications.

  • Examines the unique design considerations and workflows required for successful additive manufacturing implementation.

  • Analyzes successful business cases and demonstrates how to identify and articulate the value that AM brings to different applications and industries.

  • Provides practical guidance on building and leading additive manufacturing project teams, including best practices for project management and a deeper dive into qualification and certification pathways.
